if you wanna be a telecommunication engineer, involved in TELCO project, you must master the SS7 and it's message, because majority protocol used in TELCO is SS7 some of them using TCP/IP, SS7 control the signalling messages between BTS to BSC to MSC. I think may resources from the net explaining a lot about this protocol.

If you wanna involved both in IP based and SS7 based, you can apply the job for Intelligent network or data service, in this field you will work providing service Prepaid, VPN, and SMS to subsribers, you must have good knowledge of SS7 also TCP/IP, unix knowledge is a must, because the equipment used is minicomputer unix based, IBM-unix, HP-UX, Solaris Unix. also a good knowledge of database, like SQL,because when we do trouble shoot, we will use SQL commands to check our service databases.

 

Btw if you are a fast learner you can doing it by on job training, but at first you must basic knowledge to let the HRD accept you first., yeah like database knowledge or unix or TCP/IP, SS7 you can study later, but if you knew it earlier, it's better
